Some companies are brokering deals with streaming services to showcase films temporarily in theaters before quickly moving to TV screens. Other chains are thinking bigger and choosing to bring the concession stand directly to your kitchen table. Introducing: AMC popcorn! Only at Walmart! Yes, you can buy that overpriced $11 small popcorn and crunch it loudly in the comfort of your own couch!
AMC Theatres Perfectly Popcorn will come in microwave or ready-to-eat form. But you’ll have to supply your own version of that iconic pumped “butter.” via The Takeout:
AMC Theatres Perfectly Popcorn will be available in both microwave pouches or pre-popped and ready to eat, and it comes three varieties: Classic Butter, Extra Butter, and Lightly Salted. The Extra Butter microwave variety also comes with extra packets of “buttery topping” (I’m assuming they’re not legally allowed to call it butter) so you can apply the ideal amount to your popcorn.
This isn’t necessarily a groundbreaking development; large chains will often put their name on grocery products to bring in some extra coin (looking at you, TGI Fridays). Yet AMC insists the popcorn you get at Walmart is the same popcorn you get at its theaters and that it brings “movie theatre popcorn taste and aroma to the comfort of home.”
I’m not overly certain about this move. Part of the charm of movie theater popcorn is having a dead-eyed teenager shovel those unnaturally yellow kernels into a collectible Star Wars or Creed III bag. AMC has more in store for popcorn fans. They also plan on selling their cholesterol-raising wares in mall kiosks, to-go packages in theaters, and even delivered directly to your home.
