"For those who have been obsessed with Hocus Pocus since its release in 1993, you're in luck because Disney-Hyperion, a publishing house owned by Disney, just released a book sequel that just so happens to include a lesbian couple.
The book, titled Hocus Pocus and the All-New Sequel, was released on July 10 and according to Autostraddle, the first third of the book is a retelling of the movie but the second part takes place 25 years later and follows Max and Allison's 17-year-old daughter, Poppy.
'Poppy, finds herself face-to-face with the Sanderson sisters in all their sinister glory,' the description read. 'When Halloween celebrations don't quite go as planned, it's a race against time as Poppy and her friends fight to save her family and all of Salem from the witches' latest vile scheme.'
And while Poppy is fighting to save her home from the sinister Sanderson sisters, she manages to fall for one of her classmates, a popular girl named Isabella. And judging from an excerpt from the book, it's plain as day that too have romantic feelings for each other.
The book read: 'Well, I wouldn’t miss it.” Isabella gives me a smile that makes my stomach flip a little. 'There’s no way I’d leave you hanging.'
'It's not fair that you’re so nice.' I take another piece of pizza. 'People aren’t supposed to be smart and popular and nice. What’s your weakness, Isabella Richards?'
Her smile flags a little, and for a second she looks mystified — but then it’s gone. 'Halloween candy,' she says, matter-of-factly, then grins and takes another sip of soda.
And according to Autostraddle, Isabella is also African-American and so is Travis, Isabella's other best friend.
The book already has 3.8 out five stars on Amazon and reviews from people calling it 'inclusive' and 'nostalgic'.
'I love that they finally realize that not everyone in the world is straight. A modern appreciated fresh look at another side of young relationships,' one review said. And another person wrote: 'It is inclusive, witty and it has all the nostalgia to make us who grew up with this immortal movie extremely happy!'
Last September, it was reported by Deadline that Disney Channel was in early stages of development on a Hocus Pocus TV movie and while it's unconfirmed if the movie will follow the book the sequel, there is no doubt fans of the 90s classic would love to to see queer and racially diverse characters represented on-screen.
