Define Gender: Victoria Sin

"Director Amrou Al-Kadhi spotlights the boundary-pushing drag performer’s transformation

For the first episode in our new series of Define Gender, British-Iraqi director Amrou Al-Kadhi drew on his experience as creative director of drag group Denim, to create a portrait of London-based artist and performer Victoria Sin. Here, he talks about the ideas behind the film:

“Victoria Sin is my hero. While many London drag queens have dismissed politics for social capital, Victoria’s drag constantly challenges, provokes, and rejuvenates the city’s queer spaces.

“I’m so inspired by how Victoria unapologetically takes up space when they are in drag. They give spotlight and agency to the daily labors of femininity that are invisible and policed. My hope is that viewers will experience the transformative power of Victoria’s drag, and will watch this queer unicorn warrior be where they belong—in cinematic grandeur, with a gaze that they own.” " -Nowness
