We reported on Tuesday that Raf Simons would indeed be taking over the helms of Fashion house Dior and the man speaks on that move to WWD in a short interview below.
Much has been made of Raf Simons’ appointment to Dior, and the subsequent minimalist face-off that will supposedly follow (according to all the major critics) between him, Hedi Slimane at YSL and Phoebe Philo at Celine. But Raf Simons would like you to not pigeonhole him as strictly a minimalist.
Simons gave an interview in today’s WWD to offer a little glimpse into what we can expect from a Simons-designed Dior collection. The first thing he wanted to do is make sure we understand his aesthetic a little better.
“I don’t think it’s wrong to call me a minimalist. It’s wrong to call me a minimalist only,” he told the trade. “I am also a romantic person.” If you look back at his beautiful and soft last collection for Jil Sander, it just underscores that statement. He went on to say, “I wouldn’t go to that place if I only had minimalism in mind. I’m very aware of what the environment is about.”
Simons has arrived in Paris to start working on his first couture collection for Dior, which will be shown in July. While he wouldn’t dish about what the collection will look like (if he even has any idea at this point) he told WWD, “I’m interested in creativity, the evolution of creativity and the relationship between creativity and the times we live in.” He also apparently loves orchids, tulips, and roses, but we wouldn’t expect him to produce a literal flower-inspired collection like the one Galliano did back in 2010. But we’re excited to see what blooms at Dior with Simons at the helm. -fashionista.com
