Lady Gaga Goes To The Ball

Just wrapping up her two day stint on the Monster Ball here in Los Angeles (where we were in attendance) Lady Gaga some how found the time to fly to Washington DC to perform for President Obama's Inaugural Ball today.

Here's the story from Huffington Post:

Lady Gaga is typically a hot (and expensive) ticket. But on Tuesday night in Washington D.C., several thousand people got the chance to see Lady Gaga, President Obama, Michelle Obama and Tony Bennett on one stage for a mere $10.

As predicted, Gaga and Bennett performed at President Obama's final Inauguration event, a Staff Ball for White House aides and campaign staffers. If the combination of Gaga, Bennett and the Obamas seems odd to you, it did to POTUS as well. "The average age here is probably around 20 something. And that’s only because I’m here, which brings the average age up, quite a bit..." he quipped to the crowd.

It was also strange because as any fashion lover knows, Gaga doesn't tend towards Jason Wu gowns or other White House-appropriate gear. So what did the pop songstress wear to perform for the Obamas and 10,000 of their closest friends?

A rather lovely balance between avant garde and D.C. glam, in fact: a gauzy off-white gown with globular embellishments along the shoulders and hips, studs around the neckline and corset-like string across the boobs, back and bodice. Oh, and a massive skirt.

Congratulations Shakira! It's A Boy!

Our favorite, is a new mama! Shakira welcomed a baby to to the world today and we bet it will grow to be as talented and beautiful as the Colombian superstar!

From her website the offficial announce was posted, “We are happy to announce the birth of Milan Piqué Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Piqué, born January 22nd at 9:36pm, in Barcelona, Spain. The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification.”

LA Nocturne By Artist Jeneleen Floyd

A dark, eerie, yet beautiful video collage inspired by artist Jeneleen Floyd's collages featuring the racy side of Los Angeles Film Noir accompanied by a forgotten thrift shop tune re-imangined for the digital age.

Artist Jeneleen Floyd Unveils Sensual New Work Inspired by Hollywood Noir Anatomical drawings come to life and vintage pinups frolick with butterflies in today’s short LA Nocturne, created from the signature collages of Jeneleen Floyd. The animation is set to the backdrop of photographer Max Yavno and Lee Shippey’s 1950s tome The Los Angeles Book, found in a thrift store in Floyd's SoCal neighborhood of Echo Park. “I hadn't intended on using it for collages,” explains the artist, whose creations were recently displayed at the 2012 Santorini Biennale of Arts in Greece and feature in this month's “Kiss Me Deadly: Contemporary Neo-Noir from Los Angeles” at London's Paradise Row gallery. “When I started working on the concept for the show I instantly went and grabbed it from my shelf. I decided to use the book as the character itself.” The exhibition, curated by Texas-born art consultant Price Latimer Agah, examines representations of Tinseltown and its history through works from artists such as Jonah Freeman & Justin Lowe, Francesca Gabbiani, Mark Hagen and Glenn Kaino. “It has all the elements of a great neo-noir,” says Agah of today's video. “Symbolic allusions, a stark palette, foreboding music, femmes fatales, jarring editing and a dark mood of hopelessness and romanticism. Target To Collaborate with Celeb Stylist Kate Young on Eveningwear

Have a formal event to attend? Well instead of getting that much needed gown at Barney's, you will now be able to use you weekly Target trip and cut your errands short.

Target is continuing to evolve its collaboration format.

Interspersed with the single designer collaborations we know and love, it’s been throwing in a few curve balls: There’s The Shops at Target, which has the retailer collaborating with off-the-beaten-path shops around the country; there was the not-so-successful Neiman Marcus holiday collaboration; and now it’s tapped a celebrity stylist to design a range of eveningwear.

Kate Young, who styles red carpet queens like Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams and works with Jason Wu as a consultant and stylist, is designing a range of semiformal and special-occasion dresses to hit stores April 14 (just in time for prom?). She was also named Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylist by The Hollywood Reporter last year.

“I’ve been working with Target for a number of years as a stylist, so having the chance to design my own collection with a brand I already know and love is like a dream come true,” said Young in a release.

Though it’s not Young’s first gig with a mass retailer, it’s a surprising move for Target–a little eveningwear with your paper towels? But the increasing ubiquity of designer/mass retailer collabs means Target has to experiment with ways to stray from what’s expected. “As [designer collaborations] have become more common, our partnerships have taken on many different shapes,” a Target Corp. spokesman told WWD.

We’re not sure how The Shops at Target are doing, but a spokesman (who did not give his name) had all kinds of explanations for why the Neiman Marcus collection didn’t work out as planned.

There are two spikes during the Christmas season, Black Friday and last-minute shopping just before Christmas,” he said. “There’s that lull in between. The line was timed to excite consumers during that time. We underestimated that lull. Consumers were fatigued coming out of Black Friday. They were looking for deals. It was priced a bit higher than some of our partnerships because products had real silk, hand-beading and 18-karat gold. We believe we created a price barrier. This is clear given the strong uptick in sales once the collection went on sale at 50 percent off. It was also all about inventory. Missoni + Target sold out in a day. There was so much excitement going into the [Neiman’s] partnership that, in an effort not to disappoint guests, we more than doubled the inventory. We still moved through most of the collection, but there were some barriers we faced.

Fair enough, though we have some other theories as well and wonder if Kate Young’s collection could face any similar challenges.

The collection will range in price from $29.99 to $89.99 for apparel (which makes us a little nervous about the quality of the eveningwear) and $14.99 to $49.99 for jewelry, handbags and shoes, which will be available online only.

Don’t think this means the end of those designer collaborations though. “We have more designers coming up this year and over the course of next year.” Trish Adams, senior vice president of apparel and accessories at Target, told the trade.
