ItsNotYouItsMe Throwback Raises A Champagne Glass Commemorating 5 Latin Musique Biographical Films You Should Already Know From "Selena" To "Gloria"!

ItsNotYouItsMe Throwback Thursday raises a champagne glass commemorating 5 latin musique biographical films you should already know from "Selena" To "Gloria"!

"Celebrity documentaries and/or docu-series are becoming very popular on platforms such as Netflix, Telemundo, Univision, and YouTube. We’ve already been blessed with the life stories of artists such as Karol G’s La Guerrera del Genero, Anitta’s Vai Anitta, and Maluma’s Lo Que Era, Lo Que Soy, Lo Que Fui, and it stands to reason that many more Latin artists will have their stories turned into a movie over the coming years.

Billboard broke the news last week that a feature film on the late Regional Mexican diva Jenni Rivera was in the works. “My sister dreamt of a biopic of her life for many years, we are thrilled it will come to fruition,” said Rosie Rivera.

Rights to tell the story of Rivera’s life were secured from Jenni Rivera Enterprises by Javier Chapa and Simon Wise of Mucho Mas Media and by Donald De Line.

In honor of the exciting news, we're revisiting five Latin music biopics to watch.

La Bamba (1987)

Lou Diamond Phillips portrays Chicano rock-n-roll star Ritchie Valens in the 1987 film La Bamba. The flick tells the story of Valens impactful music career on his family and the Latin culture, and highlights his timeless hit “La Bamba.”

Selena (1997)

Many people first discovered Jennifer Lopez when she portrayed late Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla in the 1997 biographical drama Selena. The film, which follows the Queen of Tejano's life story from her humble beginnings to gaining international fame to her tragic death, was released two years after her passing.

For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story (2000)

In 2000, HBO Films brought to life the story of Cuban jazz musician Arturo Sandoval in For Love or Country. The movie, with Andy Garcia as the lead star, captures Sandoval’s heartbreaking decision to migrate from his country in order to achieve success and his relationship with jazz icon Dizzy Gillespie.

El Cantante (2006)

Hector Lavoe’s story hit the big screen in 2006 with El Cantante. Marc Anthony portrayed the late salsa singer while Jennifer Lopez portrayed his on-screen wife, Puchi. In the film, Lavoe’s personal and career stories are told from the viewpoint of Puchi (Lopez).

Gloria (2015)

Netflix’s Gloria is a film based on the tumultuous early life of Mexican pop diva Gloria Trevi. “It made me cry, it made me laugh, it made me mad, it was hard to watch. But this movie has a positive message,” Trevi previously told Billboard." - Billboard.com
