Meet Photographer Polly Borland

Meet photographer Polly Borland Australian photographer now living in England whose quirky images of famous faces and characters influenced at a young age by Diane Arbus the similarites are apparent in this interview video by nowness.com.

Polly Borland: Polymorphous The Absurdist Photographer of Cate Blanchett, Queen Elizabeth II and Nick Cave Has the Lens Turned on Her

Polly Borland is perhaps best known for her unconventional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as her startlingly direct images of fellow countryman Nick Cave, who she has photographed for nearly 35 years. In the illuminating feature length documentary Polymorphous directed by Alex Chomicz and produced by Filmfolk, the Brighton-based, Australian photographer becomes the subject. Below, Borland’s long-standing muse and confidante describes the experience of posing for her grotesque and unsettling series, Smudge.

Nick Cave on Polly Borland

Rock stars are cartoons—we are supposed to be seen from afar, and Polly’s very much the same way, with the red hair and the glasses. She convinced me to do a session and I was kind of terrified to be honest because you were really at the mercy of Polly’s imagination. I was taken into a room and over two days had to put on tights and stockings. I’d wear stockings over my head and fright wigs and be made up in different ways, with little ping pong balls and balled-up bits of fluff pushed down the leotard, so I kind of looked kind of leprous. And I had to give myself over to this process of being degraded, initially degraded and there was quite a beautiful thing that happened out of that. You read about this sort of thing, but there was a kind of transformation that came about within me through this ritual of degradation that she put me through—it was really exciting. Everything was stripped away.

Video Premiere Lily Allen - Sheezus

Lily Allen is back and she is not playing pretty when it comes to her pop contemporaries. Check out her latest video for the albums title track "Sheezus" and a interview from Rolling Stone on the tell it like it is single.

Allen recently told Rolling Stone she wrote the song backwards, beginning with the word "divas," which rhymes with "Sheezus." From there, the song's message about female pop singers came to her. "I don't like being compared to other people because I'm quite aware that there are people who are far more talented and have better singing voices than me," she said. "I don't like being put in the same category as people because we have the same genitals and boobs. Nobody is going to write 'Lily Allen vs. Ed Sheeran.' It just doesn't happen."

Instead, she said the song was a call for unity of sorts. Of the women she toasts in the song, she said, "I want all of them to be Sheezus, and I want to be Sheezus too."

Allen called the album titled a "confident title choice, and a little nod to Kanye West" when she announced it in February. But unlike West's Yeezus, which bore a sparse cover, she gave the record an ornate cover, featuring her sitting amid three corgis atop a Roman-looking building with the words "divide and conquer" written on it.

GRACE CODDINGTON'S APARTMENT IS FILLED WITH CAT PILLOWS

Next time were in NYC we gotta stop by Grace's home because it is as welcoming and perfect as the red haired creative director of American Vogue. Take a peek inside with WSJ Magazine.

WORLD RENOWNED for her magic touch with clothes, Grace Coddington is curating an auction celebrating their absence. Although the irony of that will be lost on no one, Coddington's career in fashion actually began with a nude—her first picture ever, when she started modeling in 1959. "I think I was very naive. It didn't occur to me that it was a weird thing to do, but I thought Norman Parkinson was an extraordinary photographer, and when he asked me to take off my clothes, it was just the same as 'Stand up' or 'Sit down.'" What "Parks" actually got her to do, though, was run around naked in the woods, as she offhandedly recounts in Grace, her 2012 memoir.

Coddington assumed that when Alexander Gilkes, co-founder of the online auction house Paddle8, first approached her it wasn't because of her knack with nudes. "I thought it would be fashion pictures, so I said yes, and then it turned out to be portraits," says Coddington. "If there's one thing I'm known for, it's 'Don't crop a picture.' I want the feet in it. So portraits weren't working for me. And they didn't want fashion pictures—I guess they don't sell for as much—so then they said nudes."

"We felt it was the best way to celebrate the artist and the quality of photography," says Gilkes. "Strip away the clothes and focus on the nude." Hence the title of the auction (viewable at Paddle8.com from May 1 to 16), slightly arch in light of Coddington's role as the creative director of Vogue: "No Clothes." Even though she was keen to curate something within the area for which she is best known, she made peace with its polar opposite by reconceptualizing the nude as a kind of canvas for her work. "We start out on a fashion shoot with a girl who has no clothes on, and we build from that: the hair, the makeup, the clothes. But she starts with nothing."

Adventures in Monochrome in a Spellbinding French Fashion Short “When you're a young artist, you don't really have another choice than preserving an independent spirit if you want to make your ideas happen,” says Zoë Le Ber, who stars in the seductively languid Trois Soeurs alongside fellow Parisians Solene Hebert, last year’s face of Nina Ricci, and Priscilla de Laforcade, an actress and member of the indie-pop duo Les Chanteuses. Directed by Bulgarian photographer and filmmaker Elina Kechicheva, the trio form part of a generation of emerging models, actresses and singer-songwriters, with mutlti-hyphenate Le Ber recently directing the exhibitionist art short, Hors Les Murs for fashion and culture title Purple. “French cinema is known for its unexpectedness and accessibility, and today there is still the same drive as the days of the 'New Wave' to do something living and pertinent,” says Herbert.“The cinema is still so young," adds Le Ber. “The nouvelle vague was just the first intense wave of a long series, I hope.”
