Don’t hate them because they’re beautiful. Let’s face it—these days, keeping up appearances is a full-time job—not just for the professional models on these pages, but for all of us. And while Daria Werbowy, Kate Moss, Lara Stone, Raquel Zimmermann, and their ilk all come by their gorgeousness the old-fashioned way—i.e., they inherited it—and look as spectacular just off the runway as they do just out of bed (or, in this case, in skimpy denim and virtually nonexistent hairstyling and makeup), those of us who are not so naturally endowed have to really work at it. For us there is Botox, Barry’s Bootcamp, balayage…a whole industry devoted to the power of transformation. But in our tireless pursuit, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that beauty is not just a physical attribute; it’s also a state of mind-—an attitude. Take it from Helena Rubinstein, whose fascinating life Holly Brubach recalls in our November issue. Rubinstein was a self-made woman through and through. But while the business of beauty made her exceedingly rich, no amount of mascara or lipstick could have transformed her into Kate Moss. Not that she gave a damn. Let that be a lesson.
