Betsey Johnson’s Back With a New Dress Collection, Plans To Show a ‘Retrospective Collection’ At New York Fashion Week

Bankrupt but still fabulous as Betsy Johnson will strut full steam ahead with a new dress collection.

Though Betsey Johnson filed for bankruptcy back in April, the designer hardly has plans to fade into the background anytime soon. Actually, it’s just the opposite. (Really, though, did you expect anything less? This is Betsey, after all–the woman is about to turn 70 and never missed a chance to cartwheel down the runway.) Johnson is kicking off her comeback with a new collection of dresses, made in collaboration with The Levy Group. According to the press release, the new line will range in price from $99 to $249, and will make its debut at Betsey Johnson’s Spring/Summer 2013 Retrospective Fashion Show this September at New York Fashion Week. We’re to expect “sexy,” “great fitting, fun silhouettes,” in solids and in prints, for both casual and dressy affairs. Oh and (of course) loads of “signature Betsey details.”

Or, as Johnson, herself, described it: “”I’m back!!! Doing my dress thing. Pretty and punk, sweet and sexy, always rock n’ roll.”

The Levy Group, Johnson‘s licensee for outerwear, is equally pleased. “The Levy Group has had an outstanding relationship with Betsey Johnson for over 5 years now, working together on her outerwear collection,” Donald Levy, President of The Levy group said. “It was a natural progression to continue into another category.”

In fact, this new dress collection, designed in collaboration with the Levy Group’s Design Director Suzi Chin, also marks the company’s expansion into the dress category. Previously, they’ve focused on casualwear and outerwear (they own brands like Nautica and Perry Ellis) but with the hire of Phillip Gaynor who is now President of Dress Brands of the Levy Group, we can expect more collections like this to start popping up soon.

We, for one, are happy that Johnson is back on the saddle. I mean, what would fashion week be without her cartwheel?? - fashionista
