On winning an Oscar... “It was life-changing - it opened a lot of doors. But it made people have a lot of opinions about what should happen next. You realize quickly that you can never please everybody.”
Legendary Actress Shirley MacLaine On Charlize Theron..."For a woman that beautiful and that intelligent, she has a very down-to-earth approach to life,” says Shirley MacLaine, who befriended Theron after an awards ceremony in which an awestruck Theron planted a playful kiss on MacLaine’s behind. “She has opted for simplicity, and that is a very wise choice.”
On having a revelation in the middle of filming Young Adult... “I realized how much I love what I do. I really, really missed it. Like around week three, I had this horrible, sappy moment where I got a little overwhelmed. It was just a really great f—ing experience.”
On her breakup with longtime love Stuart Townsend: “It was sinking, and I had to give it a fight. I really wanted to try and make it work. That was the priority. I wouldn’t do it any different way.”
On how she felt post-breakup while filming the movie...“I’d gotten out of a relationship, and I was in this really floaty place. My feet weren’t touching the ground. I just kind of turned to [Reitman] and was like, ‘I feel like me again.’ ”
On rediscovering herself after always having been in a relationship since the age of 19 yrs old..."This is the first time in my life, from the time I was nineteen, I’ve been in relationships, literally gone from one to the other within a month. It’s been good for me. I’m a creature who’s really found her comfort zone in relationships. It’s been nice to rediscover myself.I had to make a real conscious effort to do it—it’s hard. It’s much easier to lose yourself in flowers and cigarettes and coffee with somebody else."
